Sustainability claims in the beauty industry have become so prevalent that they have lost much of their meaning. Every brand plants trees. Every brand uses recycled packaging. Every brand claims to be green.

SADHEV does not ask you to accept its sustainability credentials on the basis of language. Each commitment documented here is specific, verifiable and operates through a defined mechanism. Here is exactly what SADHEV does, how it does it and what it means in practice.

“Sustainability that cannot be traced is not sustainability. It is storytelling.”

Commitment 1 — Plastic Positive Certification

SADHEV is certified Plastic Positive by The Disposal Company — an authorised certification body that manages Plastic Positive and Plastic Neutral programmes for brands across India.

The mechanism works as follows. Every month, SADHEV calculates the plastic component in every unit sold — accounting for the type of plastic in each product's packaging and the total volume of units shipped. This gives a specific figure: the total kilograms of plastic SADHEV has introduced into circulation through that month's sales. SADHEV then pays The Disposal Company for the collection and recycling of 5% more than that figure. The Disposal Company uses this payment to engage rag pickers across India who collect plastic from streets, communities and collection points nationwide. That plastic is sent to certified recyclers and converted into furniture, toys and construction materials.

The distinction between Plastic Positive and Plastic Neutral is important. Plastic Neutral means paying for the collection of exactly the plastic you consume. Plastic Positive means paying for more than you consume. SADHEV pays for 5% more every month — meaning its operations result in a net reduction of plastic in the environment, not merely an offset.

This cost is absorbed entirely by SADHEV. There is no checkout contribution asked of consumers. No optional add-on. No rounding up. SADHEV pays for the full programme every month as a brand operational cost.

For the complete explanation of how the Plastic Positive certification works and what distinguishes it from the environmental claims most brands make, see our detailed guide on what Plastic Positive actually means.

Commitment 2 — Sadhevana: The 80-Acre Certified Organic Farm

SADHEV operates Sadhevana — an 80-acre certified organic farm on the outskirts of Chennai. The farm is the source of key ingredients used in SADHEV formulations.

Sadhevana uses Panchakavya as its sole fertiliser. Panchakavya is the classical Ayurvedic bio-fertiliser — prepared from five cow-derived ingredients (cow dung, urine, milk, curd and ghee) combined with coconut water, banana and jaggery, fermented and applied to the soil. Zero chemical fertilisers are used anywhere on the farm. No synthetic pesticides. No artificial soil amendments.

This matters for sustainability on two levels. First, chemical-free farming means no synthetic chemicals entering the soil, water table or surrounding ecosystem from SADHEV's agricultural operations. Second, it matters for formulation quality. Ingredients grown in chemically fertilised soil have a different mineral profile and biological activity than ingredients grown in soil maintained through classical organic methods. The farm is not a sustainability gesture. It is an agricultural commitment that directly affects the therapeutic quality of the ingredients it produces.

For the full story of why Sadhevana exists and why the farm behind an Ayurvedic product matters for what is actually in the bottle, see our guide on why the farm behind your Ayurvedic product matters.

Commitment 3 — Green Chemistry Across Every Formulation

SADHEV uses only globally approved safe chemicals across the entire range. Where a formulation requires preservatives for stability, SADHEV uses biodegradable, nature-identical compounds — molecules that are structurally similar to compounds found in nature, that break down safely in the environment and that carry no established toxicological concerns at the concentrations used in cosmetic formulations.

This commitment excludes parabens, phthalates, synthetic surfactants, petrochemical derivatives and any ingredient that is persistent, bioaccumulative or toxic under standard environmental assessment. Every ingredient in every SADHEV formulation is assessed not just for skin safety but for environmental impact.

Green chemistry is the least visible of SADHEV's sustainability commitments and the one that operates most consistently. Every product, every batch, every formulation decision is filtered through this standard. It is not an aspiration. It is a design constraint.

Commitment 4 — One Tree Per Purchase

SADHEV plants one tree for every purchase made. This is a separate commitment from the Plastic Positive programme — it addresses carbon sequestration and biodiversity, while Plastic Positive addresses the specific environmental harm that packaging causes. The two programmes address different problems and operate through different mechanisms. Neither replaces the other.

Commitment 5 — 100% Vegan and Cruelty Free

No SADHEV product or ingredient is tested on animals at any stage. No animal-derived ingredients are used in any SADHEV formulation. Both commitments are formulation standards that apply across the entire range without exception and have been maintained since the brand's founding.

For the complete answer to every ethical and sustainability question about SADHEV, including its vegan status, cruelty-free certification and toxin-free formulation standards, see our complete brand ethics guide.

“Every SADHEV sustainability commitment is specific, monthly, funded and traceable. None of them are aspirational.”

What This Means When You Buy SADHEV

When you purchase a SADHEV product, the following happens beyond the transaction itself. One tree is planted. A monthly plastic calculation is updated. A payment is made to The Disposal Company for the plastic in your product's packaging plus 5%. Rag pickers in communities across India collect the equivalent plastic from the environment. That plastic goes to certified recyclers.

The packaging you hold in your hand is offset before it leaves your home. Not eventually. Not in aggregate across the brand's history. That month. That unit. That packaging.

This is what it means to make a purchasing decision with SADHEV. The product works because the formulation is built on a 200-year lineage. The purchase works for the environment because the sustainability commitments are designed to be real.

For the full story of the 200-year vaidyar lineage that informs SADHEV's formulation approach alongside its sustainability commitments, see our guide on what a 200-year Ayurvedic lineage actually means.
