The advice most people receive for dark circles is to sleep more. It is well-intentioned and sometimes helpful. It is also, for most people with persistent dark circles, almost entirely irrelevant.
The under eye area darkens for three distinct reasons, only one of which is fatigue. Understanding which cause is driving your dark circles is the first step to addressing them correctly. Ayurveda classified these causes clearly and formulated accordingly — not with a single cream that promises to do everything, but with targeted ingredients chosen for their specific actions on each underlying mechanism.

“The under eye skin is the thinnest on the face. It requires the most specific treatment and tolerates the least compromise in formulation quality.” |
The Three Causes of Dark Circles — The Ayurvedic View
Cause 1 — Pigmentation (Pitta)
The most common cause of dark circles in Indian skin types is hyperpigmentation — excess melanin in the under eye skin driven by sun exposure, Pitta imbalance, post-inflammatory response or genetic predisposition. This type presents as brown or brownish-black discolouration that is consistent throughout the day and does not improve significantly with sleep or cold compresses. It is the under eye equivalent of facial pigmentation and requires brightening ingredients that inhibit melanin production.
Cause 2 — Structural Thinning (Vata)
The second cause is structural. The under eye skin is the thinnest skin on the face — it has no oil glands, dehydrates faster than any other area and becomes progressively thinner with age and lack of nourishment. As the skin thins, the blood vessels and dark tissue beneath it become more visible, creating a bluish-purple shadow that appears particularly pronounced when fatigued or dehydrated. This type does improve with sleep — temporarily — because sleep reduces fluid pooling and inflammation that make the thinning more visible. The underlying cause is Vata imbalance: dryness, depletion and lack of nourishment.
Cause 3 — Fluid Retention (Kapha)
The third cause is fluid retention — puffiness and swelling in the under eye area that creates a shadow effect rather than true pigmentation. This is most pronounced in the morning, caused by Kapha accumulation, excessive salt or alcohol intake, allergies or lymphatic congestion. This type reduces through the day as fluid drains with upright posture. It responds to cooling, astringent ingredients that support lymphatic drainage and reduce inflammation.
Why the Under Eye Cannot Share Products with the Rest of the Face
The under eye skin is structurally different from the rest of the face. Its thinness makes it more permeable — ingredients penetrate faster and with less resistance. This means products formulated for the face can irritate, dehydrate or overwhelm the under eye area even when they work perfectly elsewhere. Heavier moisturisers can cause milia. Exfoliating acids cause sensitivity. Even gentle face serums can produce puffiness when applied too close to the eye.
This is why classical Ayurveda always treated the under eye area with specifically formulated preparations — lighter, more targeted, with ingredients chosen for their compatibility with thin, delicate tissue.
SADHEV Ayurvedic Under Eye Gel — The Targeted Treatment
SADHEV Ayurvedic Under Eye Gel addresses all three causes of dark circles through a formulation of complementary Ayurvedic ingredients in a lightweight gel base that is appropriate for under eye skin.
Cucumber extract provides immediate cooling and reduces puffiness through its astringent and anti-inflammatory action — addressing the Kapha-driven fluid retention cause directly. Rose water tones, soothes and hydrates the thin under eye tissue. Liquorice extract is one of the most well-evidenced natural brightening ingredients — it inhibits tyrosinase and reduces the melanin-driven pigmentation that causes Pitta-type dark circles. Aloe vera provides the deep, lightweight hydration that nourishes Vata-depleted skin without heaviness or occlusion.
Apply SADHEV Ayurvedic Under Eye Gel using the ring finger — the weakest finger, producing the least pressure on delicate skin — in gentle tapping motions from the inner corner outward. Apply morning and evening after toning and before any heavier products. Allow it to absorb fully before the next step.
What to Expect at Each Stage
Week one to two: the cooling and puffiness-reduction effect is immediate. Mornings will look less swollen within three to five days of consistent application. Week three to four: the area begins to feel more hydrated and the structural thinning that makes darkness more visible starts to improve as the skin is consistently nourished. Week six to eight: the liquorice begins to visibly reduce pigmentation-driven darkness. This is the slowest response because pigmentation requires time to fade regardless of the treatment.
Consistent use twice daily is the most important variable. Applying an under eye gel occasionally produces occasional results. Applied consistently, the cumulative nourishment of the under eye tissue produces improvements that compound over time.
Where the Under Eye Gel Fits in the Full Skincare Routine
SADHEV Ayurvedic Under Eye Gel is applied in the evening routine after toning and before the face oil, and in the morning after toning and before the moisturiser.
