Ayurvedic Anti-Ageing Skincare — All the Benefits of Retinol, Without Any of the Side Effects

Ayurvedic Anti-Ageing Skincare — All the Benefits of Retinol, Without Any of the Side Effects

Retinol is the most clinically validated anti-ageing ingredient in modern skincare. It stimulates collagen production, accelerates cell turnover, reduces the appearance of fine lines and fades pigmentation. The evidence is extensive and consistent.

The problem is the side effects. Retinol causes photosensitivity, dryness, peeling, redness and irritation — particularly in the first weeks of use. It cannot be used during pregnancy. It requires careful introduction, sun protection and a period of skin adjustment that many people find difficult to manage. The result is that the majority of people who try retinol discontinue it before seeing its benefits.

Ayurveda offers an alternative that delivers the same core benefits through plant-derived compounds that work through the same biological pathways without the inflammatory side effects. SADHEV's anti-ageing range is built on two of these compounds: Bakuchiol and naturally derived retinol from mastic resin. Here is what they are, how they work, and how they fit into an Ayurvedic anti-ageing protocol that addresses every dimension of skin ageing simultaneously.

“Bakuchiol is not a retinol replacement. It is a plant compound that achieves the same biological outcomes — collagen stimulation, cell turnover, pigmentation reduction — without the inflammatory pathway that causes retinol's side effects.”

Bakuchiol — The Ayurvedic Retinol

Bakuchiol is derived from the seeds of the Babchi plant — Psoralea corylifolia — which has been used in classical Ayurveda for thousands of years. It is not chemically related to retinol, but it activates the same retinol-responsive genes in the skin, producing the same downstream effects: increased collagen production, improved cell turnover, reduced fine lines and more even skin tone.

The critical difference is the mechanism. Conventional retinol achieves these effects through a pathway that includes an initial inflammatory response — the irritation, peeling and redness that characterise the retinol adjustment period. Bakuchiol achieves the same outcomes through a different molecular pathway that does not include this inflammatory step. The result is equivalent efficacy with significantly better tolerability, particularly for sensitive skin.

Bakuchiol is also stable in sunlight, unlike conventional retinol which degrades on UV exposure and must be used only at night. Bakuchiol can be used morning and evening, making it more practical and more consistently effective than retinol for daily use.

Naturally Derived Retinol from Mastic — A Different Source, A Gentler Delivery

The naturally derived retinol in SADHEV's formulations is sourced from mastic — a resin derived from the mastic tree. Rather than supplying retinol directly, mastic resin increases the amount of naturally occurring retinoic acid in the skin. This endogenous retinoic acid production stimulates collagen synthesis and cell regeneration through the skin's own mechanisms, producing the benefits of retinol treatment without the external delivery of a concentrated retinoid that the skin must adjust to.

The distinction matters clinically. Externally applied synthetic retinol creates an abrupt increase in retinoic acid activity that the skin experiences as disruptive, producing the inflammation and peeling of the retinol adjustment period. Mastic-derived retinoic acid stimulation works with the skin's own production capacity, increasing activity gradually rather than abruptly. The skin responds with improved texture and collagen synthesis without the adjustment period.

The SADHEV Anti-Ageing Protocol

Step 1 — The Serum: Bakuchiol + Natural Retinol, Morning and Evening

SADHEV Ayurvedic Anti-Ageing Face Serum is the first treatment step in the anti-ageing protocol. Applied after toning on clean skin, the lightweight serum delivers Bakuchiol and naturally derived retinol in a fast-absorbing formula that penetrates before the moisturiser is applied. Unlike conventional retinol serums, it can be used both morning and evening — Bakuchiol's UV stability means morning application does not create photosensitivity.

Take a few drops onto the fingertips and dot onto the forehead, cheeks, chin and neck. Massage gently with upward and outward motions until fully absorbed. Follow immediately with the anti-ageing cream. For the full protocol use morning and evening without an adjustment period — Bakuchiol does not require one.

Step 2 — The Cream: Seal, Nourish and Protect

SADHEV Ayurvedic Anti-Ageing Face Cream follows the serum immediately, sealing in the active compounds and providing the deeper moisturisation that keeps ageing skin plump, resilient and protected. The cream formulation uses Bakuchiol alongside plant-based nourishing ingredients that support the skin barrier and maintain hydration through the day and night.

The cream is suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin — a significant advantage over conventional retinol creams, which cannot be used on reactive or sensitive skin without significant risk of irritation. Apply a small amount to the face and neck after the serum has absorbed, using upward motions. Use morning and evening as part of the complete protocol.

Step 3 — Kumkumadi Tailam: The Classical Night Treatment

At night, after the serum and cream, SADHEV Kumkumadi Tailam applied as the final step adds the classical Ayurvedic dimension to the protocol. Pulwama saffron processed within 24 hours of harvest delivers crocin-driven antioxidant protection and brightening. Sandalwood and vetiver provide anti-inflammatory action that reduces the chronic low-grade inflammation driving accelerated skin ageing.

Three to five drops of SADHEV Kumkumadi Tailam pressed gently into the skin after the cream has absorbed completes the night protocol. The oil penetrates through the night while the skin is in its repair cycle, working alongside the Bakuchiol to deliver comprehensive anti-ageing action through two complementary mechanisms simultaneously.

Step 4 — The Under Eye

The under eye skin ages first and fastest. SADHEV Ayurvedic Under Eye Gel applied morning and evening with gentle tapping motions delivers cucumber, liquorice, rose and aloe vera to the most delicate skin on the face. Liquorice addresses pigmentation-driven darkness. Cucumber reduces puffiness. Applied consistently it reduces the hollowness and fine lines that make the under eye the most visible indicator of skin age.

Step 5 — Sunscreen: Non-Negotiable

All the work done by Bakuchiol, naturally derived retinol and saffron is preserved or undermined by whether daily sunscreen follows. UV exposure drives approximately 80% of visible facial ageing. SADHEV Sunscreen Gel SPF 50 PA+++ as the final morning step seals the protocol and prevents the damage that the entire anti-ageing routine is working to repair.

What to Expect and When

Because Bakuchiol does not require an adjustment period, results begin building from the first week rather than after four to six weeks of retinol adjustment. Skin feels more hydrated and even in weeks one to two. Texture improvements are visible at four to six weeks. Meaningful changes in firmness, line depth and pigmentation require consistent daily use for eight to twelve weeks.

The absence of side effects means consistent use is significantly more achievable than with conventional retinol. The protocol can be followed morning and evening without interruption, producing a more continuous anti-ageing effect than retinol protocols that require night-only application and sun avoidance.
